Cesta skrz Izrael určitě stojí za to, pokud však máte pouze 4-5 dní a chcete si i odpočinout, let do Tel Avivu a pobyt v Jaffě bude lepší varianta. Odtud se dá  udělat jednodenní výlet k mrtvému moři, do městečka Akko, Haify či Nazarethu. Na Jeruzalém doporučuju dny dva.

Road trip through Israel is definitely worth it but if you have only 4-5 days and want to relax, a flight to Tel Aviv and an accommodation in Jaffa will be a better option. From here you can take a day trip to the Dead Sea, Akko, Haifa or Nazareth. For Jerusalem I recommend two days.

Co ochutnat

  • Shakshuka – rajčatová či špenátová směs na kotlíku s dvěma ztracenými vajíčky, lilkem, Kalamata olivami, sýrem feta, paprikami a tahini (nejlepší jsme měli v Cafe Optimi v Eilat a Caffit v Jerusalémě)

  • Falafel a humus
  • Knafeh – místní oblíbený dezert ze sýra a sladkých rýžových nudlí posypaný pistáciemi
  • Typická izraelská káva okořeněná kardamomem
  •

What to try

What to be aware of

Don’t forget to pay attention to the opening hours of shops and sights. On Friday after sunset Shabbat, a time of calm and unforced activities, begins. In other words – nothing is happening. Most shops, markets and monuments are thus closed.

You need to consider what parts and when to visit. In March it is already 30 degrees in the South in the desert and by the Dead Sea which is just right. In Jerusalem or by the Sea of Galilee, however, the temperature can drop to 5 degrees in the evening. On the other hand, from May to September it is too hot in the South. The ideal time for road trip is March, April, the end of September or October.

The road from Dead Sea north to Nazareth – the journey from Bersheva and above is paid and also longer. The locals advised us to travel through Palestine. Refuel if you can, we came across the first gas station halfway through Palestine. Although the journey was safe, we did not have the courage to go to Jericho and continued straight to Nazareth.

Do not miss

Although Israel is not a place for hikes, it is interesting for its culture and history. It was not even possible to describe all the churches and historical sites we visited, especially in Jerusalem. On the other hand, Israel has an beautiful nature as well – coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba, the Negev Desert or the Dead Sea which is a balm not only for the body but also for the soul. To play like a small child or to see the sun to set behind the hills of Jordan which are reflected in the calm oily surface of the Dead Sea full of salt islands, is literally a necessity. It is a country exactly for those who are already tired of traveling around Asia or Europe. It is something in between and at the same time something completely different and interesting.

Fortress Masada, Dead Sea (1 day)

Masada Fortress is about 20 minutes north from Ein Bokek. We set off in the morning which turned out to be a good choice given the fact that there is a cable car to the mountain and a lot of people go up on foot as well. The walk is not too long (about 700 steps) and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace (entry to the walking route was 28 shekels). There is nothing at the top that stands out like the Acropolis in Athens but the fortress is interesting for its story, size, authenticity and the view. As one ascends towards the royal palace, the view on the fortress opens up and shows how big it is and what is hidden in it. The royal palace has three floors built on the edge of the rock with a breathtaking canyon view on one side and the dead sea view on the other. Definitely worth the visit.

Někdy kolem oběda jsme se rozhodli prozkoumat všechny fakta a mýty o plavání v mrtvém moři. Moderní pláž v Ein Bokek s velkými stínidly a sprchami působila pěkně a čistě. Teploměr ukazoval příjemných 27 stupňů. Nedočkavě jsme vyběhli do vody.

Sometime around lunch we decided to explore all the facts and myths about swimming in the Dead Sea. The modern beach in Ein Bokek with large shades and showers looked nice and clean. The thermometer showed pleasant 27 degrees Celsius. We ran eagerly into the water. First we walked on the sand, after a while salt crystals began to crunch under our feet. In the water we laid on our back. One has the feeling that there is an air mattress under him. You can even sit down and do not sink. Swimming, however, is almost impossible. To enhance the experience of the Dead Sea we bought a mud full of minerals. Within five minutes, five blacks stood on the beach but it was not a tan. Since there is nothing to eat in Ein Bokek, we drove through the mountains to Arad. Along the way we saw a beautiful promontory in the Dead Sea full of salt and salt islands. The whole experience was enhanced by the sunset which colored the sky pink-purple. The colorful sky was beautifully reflected in the oily calm surface of the Dead Sea. A view worth saving in mind.

Krásné zdobné a útulné uličky, závan orientu, muzea, kostely, mešity, galerie, kavárny a nejrůznější obchůdky.

I my jsme napsali svá přání a uschovali je.

Jerusalem (2 days)

Jerusalem is beautiful, with history literally overflowing. The historic part of the city is surrounded by walls with decorative gates, such as the Jaffa or Damascus Gate. Gates lead to beautiful decorative and cozy streets with a breath of the Orient full of museums, churches, mosques, galleries, cafes and shops. In the evening we went through the Stations of the Cross. Everything was already beautifully lit up and freed from tourists. With a guide book in hand we went through the individual stops and read the story about them. A beautiful stop was the Church of the Holy Sepulcher which reminds the place of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The church is huge and every detail is beautifully decorated. Even those who are not religious have to admit that the place has an incredible atmosphere.

The parks of Jerusalem are also beautiful. From King Street walked towards the walls of the old city through Bloomfield Park, Mitchell’s park with a beautiful view of the Tower of David and the walls of old Jerusalem, Bonei Yerushalayim Garden directly under the walls and back through Gey Ben Hinnom Park and the famous Montefiore windmill. However, the greatest experience was the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. The Western Wall is divided into a section for men and a section for women, but on both sides people pray without distinction, express their wishes, write them on a piece of paper and put them in the wall – if they still find a place. We also wrote ours and hid them in the wall.

My šli hned ráno, abychom se vyhnuli davům.

From the Western Wall we continued across the wooden bridge to the Temple Mount with the glittering golden Dome of the Rock. It is necessary to check when the Temple Mount is open. We went in the morning to avoid the crowds. It was worth it, we quickly went through the security check and immediately saw the golden dome. The temple is decorated with a beautiful blue-green mosaic and literally stands out in the middle of a large square. It’s like another world. The streets of old Jerusalem are narrow, often also covered, the space is filled by the shops on both sides, few more people and it is necessary to pull the belly to get through. Here it was just the opposite – the large space designated for praying provided a beautiful view in all directions to all the church towers and the Mount of Olives. From the Temple Mount we got to the other side of the old town to the Damascus Gate and suddenly found ourselves in the Orient. Spice shops everywhere, even on the ground on blankets.

We could not miss the Mount of Olives from which is the most beautiful view of the historic city of Jerusalem. Along the way we stopped in the Garden of Gethsemane full of old olive trees and at the Church of Mary Magdalene where one can rest a little and enjoy the beautiful view. The huge Jewish cemetery covering the Mount of Olive gives one the shivers but the view is really worth it. Judge for yourself.

Bethlehem (half day)

We decided to take a bus from a bus station near the Damascus Gate and go 12 km to Bethlehem in Palestine. We had to go through a checkpoint and a security gate – a huge concrete wall that separates Israel and Palestine. Palestine is very poor compared to Israel but there is no need to be afraid during the day. Nobody forces you to buy anything, the goods are similar to those in Israel, just half the price. We bought spices and wooden carved stars of Bethlehem from olive wood as a souvenir. Then we crawled through a tiny door, perhaps 1,5 meter high, into the Church of the Nativity. The cold temple with its concrete walls decorated with wood was full of people in a queue. After an hour of waiting we finally descended to the place where Jesus of Nazareth was born. It was a dark underground room lit by dim light where a maximum of two people could enter and touch the place where Jesus is said to have been born. Then we walked through other underground rooms of the church. A mysterious place that will leave you with a unusual feeling and is definitely worth a visit.

Tel Aviv, Port of Jaffa

Since it was a Saturday and the Temple Mount was closed, we went to Tel Aviv. We drove through the city and stopped at the Tel Aviv´s coast near the historic port of Jaffa. Jaffa is a beautiful, historic part full of markets, shops and galleries. A really inspiring place with gorgeous views. Winding streets with painted walls, churches and the port where the old docks turned into restaurants, cafes, and galleries. We also came across a bridge where all the astrological signs are depicted. The legend says that if you wish for something when you touch your sign, it will come true. We tried – we’ll see. 😊 I consider Jaffa to be one of the best places to stay if you want to go somewhere close but Europe it is still cold and the sea is not yet for swimming. Beautiful running trails, beautiful views, great food, simply a great place.

Day 5 – Source of Jordan, Akko

In the morning we drove along the Sea of Galilee with a beautiful view to the source of the Jordan River. Visitors here can wet their feet in the Jordan River or pay for the entire baptism procedure. For religious people a very deep experience, for non-religious ones interesting to see, but also to see how people earn money on others faith. After a while we drove to the historic town of Akko. The streets full of galleries, workshops and cafes fascinated us so much that we spent the whole afternoon wandering through them. In one workshop we bought metal bracelets on which the older gentleman printed a flower ornament, a little further we visited a ceramic gallery opened by three local artists. Then we went for a walk along the city walls and a little further we turned again into the winding streets. We came across the El-Jazar Mosque. The sun was hiding right behind the top of the mosque tower and its beautiful ornate architecture convinced us to put scarves on our heads according to local customs and go inside (entrance 10NIS). One of the locals explained to us how things work in the mosques – women must be on the second floor separately so that men cannot see their knees; the prayer is several times a day, always according to the position of the sun, so its time shifts for a while every day. The most interesting was the fact why most things are blue and green, the function of fish, hands and eyes on  jewelry and decorations. The locals believe that these amulets protect their families and the household. Green means paradise, blue protection against evil eyes – for example, envy. The whole day ran like a water and we had to move a little further on – to Haifa. In the morning we went to see the Haifa Gardens. The view from the top of the gardens was truly breathtaking. However, you just can’t go inside alone. You have to reserve the exact time with a guide and go in a group – nothing for us.

Negev Desert (half day)

Timna Valley is in the Negev Desert about 20 km from Eilat (entrance 44NIS / person). We drove through the park and stopped at interesting places. As always we spent most of the time in the first place, taking photos from every possible angle and then found out that it is only beginning and there are even more beautiful places. The first stop was Spiral Hill, as the name indicates – a hill in shape of the spiral. The next stop was the rock in the shape of a mushroom and a half and then the most photographed rock in the Negev desert, “The Mushroom,” which was definitely worth it. The stop at The Arches was also interesting. Something like the mini Arches in the USA but you can crawl through it using the metal steps. You can admire also drawings on the rocks from the time when the copper was mined here.
